Meaning & History

Old French name of Germanic origin, derived from Old Germanic alhs "temple" and wini "friend" (compare Alawin and Ealhwine). Alcuin was an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon scholar and theologian. He was also a teacher at the court of Charlemagne.
