Meaning & History

Georgian sources claim that this name is of Arabic origin and means "breastfeeding"—this can't be correct, however, as the actual Arabic term for "breastfeeding" is رَضَاعَة طَبِيعِيَّة (raḍāʿa ṭabīʿiyya). Therefore, it's more probable that Patman is actually a Georgian form of Fatma, which is also what the name is associated with.

In Georgian literature, Patman is the name of a character from the 12th-century epic poem The Knight in the Panther's Skin written by the Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli. She is the unfaithful wife of the chief Usen, who seduces Avtandil during his search for the princess Nestan-Darejan.
