Meaning & History

Possibly derived from Greek ἀγανός (aganos) meaning "mild, gentle" and ἵππος (hippos) meaning "horse". This was the name of various figures in Greek mythology. The most well known Aganippe was the name of both a fountain and the naiad associated with it. The well was created by the hooves of Pegasus and was associated with the Muses as a source of poetic inspiration. The nymph Aganippe is called a daughter of the river-god Termessus.
