Meaning & History

This name combines 兵 (hyou, hei, tsuwamono) meaning "army, soldier" and 衛 (ei, e) meaning "defense, protection."

Hyōe is classified as a hyakkanna (百官名), a court rank-style name that samurai used to announce oneself and give himself authority, since it comes from the name of a government office under the Ritsuryō system (兵衛府/Hyōefu).
It is also used when combining with other kanji (like Hanbē) with its combining form -bē/bee/bei, unless it combines with 左 or 右 (in this case, it can be read as either Sahē & Uhē or Sahyōe & Uhyōe).
