Meaning & History

The first element of this archaic name is probably derived from Slavic kula "globe, sphere, orb, ball". Also compare Middle High German kugel, which can mean "ball" as well as "bullet". Some Slavic peoples incorporated this Germanic word into their own languages, e.g. see Croatian kugla "ball, globe, bullet". Also, the first element should not be confused with modern Serbo-Croatian kula "tower, turret", since that word is derived from Arabic qulla "pinnacle, zenith" via Ottoman Turkish kulle "tower, turret". The second element of this name is derived from Slavic mir "peace". The name as a whole probably means something like "world of peace" or "peaceful world", with the first element (which clearly signifies something of a round shape) pointing to the world in a figurative sense.
