Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain. It may be derived from Sanskrit मनस् (manas) meaning "mind, intellect, spirit" or from Alpamysh, the name of a character from an ancient Turkic epic of the same name. Alternately, it may be derived from the name of the Manas River, which flows through Bhutan and India, or from Mount Manas, a part of the Talas Alatau mountain range, which spans parts of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The is the name of the titular character of the Kyrgyz poem the Epic of Manas. In it, Manas is a warrior hero who unites the 40 Kyrgyz tribes against the Mongols and guides them back to their ancestral homeland. He is considered a national hero of Kyrgyzstan.
