Meaning & History

Derived from Old Norse valr meaning "the dead on a battlefield, the battle-slain" (as found in the word valkyrja) and rún meaning "secret lore, rune". Alternatively the first element may be derived from Primitive Germanic *walha- meaning "Celtic, Welsh, foreign".
